Octopus is now delivering records via Publications Router

Full-text publications from Octopus, the innovative platform for scholarly research, are now being deposited automatically into UK repositories via a live feed into Jisc’s Publications Router.

What is being delivered?

Octopus joins an extensive and growing list of traditional publishers who are depositing articles into Publications Router. This ensures that work published on the platform is delivered to the relevant institutional systems promptly upon publication.

The items that Octopus sends to Router include a PDF of the full text along with the associated metadata. They are categorised based upon which aspect or stage of a research project that they represent, namely Research Problem, Rationale/Hypothesis, Methods, Results, Analysis, Interpretation, Real World Application, Peer Review.

Everything from Octopus is made available under a CC BY licence with no embargo.

Customisable feed

If your institution uses Router, you can choose which of Octopus’s publication categories (as above) you wish to take – as many as you like. It’s all under your control.

Publications Router

Router is a service that receives articles from publishers and other content providers, and automatically delivers them into the systems (such as CRISs or repositories) of the UK institutions to which any of the authors are affiliated.

Octopus.ac

Octopus.ac an open research platform that is designed to sit alongside journals as the place to share the full detail of a research project. The platform allows researchers to share their work as it happens by publishing in small units that each represent a specific aspect of their research, such as dedicated publications for hypotheses, methods, analyses and so on. These publications are linked together to form a network that represents their research project, and that can be contributed to by others who would like to build upon their work.

Being a fundamentally different form of publication compared with traditional research papers means integrating the platform with existing research infrastructure is a major project, and today Octopus is one step closer to this aim through its integration with Publications Router.

Benefits from the integration

Alexandra Freeman, founder of Octopus.ac, said “One of the things holding researchers back from publishing work on innovative, open platforms like Octopus has always been the worry that they won’t get the credit they deserve for it. Now, if their institution uses Publications Router, researchers’ Octopus publications will automatically be logged and credited to them at their institution – and be REF-able. A vital step for everyone!”

Dr Agustina Martínez, Head of Open Research Systems, Cambridge University Library, said “This new integration between Octopus and the Publications Router makes easier for researchers to make their research outputs widely available, and for institutions to track their scholarly record. By preserving Octopus outputs in institutional repositories, we ensure long-term preservation, access, and facilitate funder compliance and institutional reporting as information about outputs can also be made available to institutional research information systems automatically.”

How do I get involved?
