As the Open Access (OA) landscape continues to evolve, with updated government funder policies affecting OA requirements, we’ve created a series of short guides which explain key concepts in the UKRI open access policy, as well as open access more broadly.
Originally envisaged as resources to support publishers in understanding the steps they needed to take to offer compliant publication options to UKRI funded authors, the message we wanted to share was that there are multiple routes to policy compliance which publishers can adopt based on their circumstances.
Jisc is supporting higher education with the transition to open access through the negotiation of a range of transitional (transformative) and open access agreements which enable UK research output to be published open access in accordance with UK funder policies. The idea was to synthesise the basic information needed for the smaller and often less well-resourced publishers to understand the routes to compliance and outline high-level overviews of the process, with the aim of making it all seem less intimidating.
However, we have since expanded the original concept and are sharing the series with a wider audience as well. We realised that not only could downloadable resources be used in conversations with publishers, but they could also be used to educate researchers around open access and support scholarly communications and research support staff in their understanding of open access publication activities.
Each guide gives an overview of a concept, product or platform, the process involved, the benefits for publishers and institutions, and links to examples, extra resources and further support.
